Housewarming Gifts for a First Apartment
A first apartment is usually small, rented and half furnished. The person moving in has just paid a deposit and a month of rent, and may own one pan. That makes housewarming gifts for a first apartment easier to pick than most gifts. Nearly everything useful is still missing.
Four questions to ask before you buy
- How much space is there? A studio has no room for a bread maker. Small things that get used every day are the safe choice.
- What does the lease allow? Many leases limit nails in the walls, paint and candles. Skip gifts that need a drill.
- Are there roommates? A shared kitchen may already have three kettles. Ask what the household is short of.
- Will they move again in a year? Many first leases run 12 months. Light things that pack flat will survive the next move.
If you can, just ask. "What do you still need?" is a kind question for someone who is writing their own shopping list anyway. For a printable way to plan this, see our studio apartment planner on Etsy. Our first apartment checklist shows what that list tends to look like.
What new renters run short of first
These are the things people buy in a hurry during the first month. We do not sell any of them. Any hardware store or big box store does.
- A small tool kit with a hammer, a tape measure and a screwdriver with swappable tips
- A shower curtain, a liner and rings
- A power strip and one long phone charger cable
- Dish towels and a drying rack
- One good pan and a sheet pan
- A plunger and a toilet brush (not pretty, very welcome)
- A spare set of light bulbs
- A first aid kit
- A laundry basket that folds flat
- A step stool
Ideas by budget
| Budget | Ideas |
|---|---|
| Under $15 | Dish towels, wooden spoons, a houseplant that is hard to kill (a pothos or a snake plant), a roll of quarters if the laundry room takes coins |
| $15 to $35 | A mug, a doormat, a tool kit, a sheet pan, a grocery gift card |
| $35 to $75 | A good pan, a bedside lamp, a set of bath towels |
| Group gift | A vacuum, a microwave or a set of pots, split between a few friends or relatives |
A grocery or hardware store gift card is a fine gift. The first big shop for salt, oil, foil and cleaning spray can cost more than people expect.
For the front door
A doormat is one of the few decor gifts that suits a rental. It needs no nails, it fits any hallway, and it moves to the next place. A standard apartment door is about 3 feet wide, so an 18 by 30 inch mat sits inside the frame with room on each side.
We have two in our shop. Both are 18 by 30 inch polyester mats. The first has an arch that reads "My First Place" with wildflowers on both sides.

For the first morning
A mug is small, cheap to mail and used on day one. For a coffee gift, see this new home gift mug on Etsy. It also works when you do not know the person's taste in furniture. Pair it with a bag of coffee or a box of tea and the gift is complete.
Our first apartment mug is 11 oz white ceramic. The art has no words on it, and it is printed on both sides of the mug. It shows two cups, a plant, books and slippers.

We design the artwork. A print partner prints each item after it is ordered and ships it to the buyer. Nothing sits in a warehouse, so allow time for printing as well as delivery. Etsy shows the delivery estimate and the shipping cost at checkout. Shipping is extra. We do not offer personalization on these items.
What to skip
- Large furniture. You do not know the floor plan, and stairs are hard.
- Scented candles, unless you know they like the scent and the lease allows an open flame.
- Single-use kitchen gadgets. Counter space is short.
- Plants that need a lot of care or light. Many first apartments face a wall.
- Anything that needs a wall mount.
Timing
Wait until they have moved in. If they are still packing, share our moving checklist guide. A parcel that arrives during the move is one more box to carry. Two to four weeks after move-in day is a good window. By then they know what is missing and have a place to put it.
Add a short note. People keep the card from their first place long after the dish towels wear out.
