First Apartment Checklist: Essentials for Your First Week
Moving into your own apartment is exciting, but the first week can feel like a scramble. This room-by-room list covers the basics: food, hygiene, sleep, cleaning and paperwork, so you can settle in before you worry about decorating.
For seasonal move-in gifts, see our fall housewarming gift ideas.
1. Kitchen: feed yourself first
- Cooking tools: a saucepan, a skillet, a baking sheet, a basic knife, a cutting board, and measuring cups or spoons.
- Pantry basics: rice, pasta, canned beans, frozen vegetables, coffee or tea, oil, salt, pepper, and a few condiments you actually use. They keep for weeks, so stock up early.
- Dishes: a small set of plates, bowls, mugs and flatware. For a coffee gift, see this new home gift mug on Etsy. If you have a dishwasher, a plastic dish rack makes the first week easier.
- Cleaning supplies: dish soap, a scrub sponge, paper towels, and trash bags. Keep an all-purpose cleaner on the counter so wiping down after meals is a 30-second job.
2. Bathroom: the essentials
- Towels and washcloths, one set per person, hung near the shower.
- Toilet paper (a couple of packs to start), hand soap, and a cleaning spray for the toilet and sink.
- A small caddy for toothbrushes, razors, toothpaste, mouthwash and a hairbrush.
- Shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Travel-size bottles work fine if space is tight. For a printable way to plan this, see our studio apartment planner on Etsy.
3. Bedroom: sleep comes first
- Bedding: sheets, pillowcases, and a comforter or mattress topper if you need one.
- A nightstand with a lamp and an alarm clock (or just your phone).
- Hooks or a hanging rod so clothes go up right away instead of piling in a corner.
- A laundry basket or bag. Even a cheap tote works until you can shop for something nicer.
4. Cleaning basics
- A vacuum. A cordless handheld model works well in a small space.
- Multi-surface cleaner, microfiber cloths, and a broom and dustpan for hard floors.
- Trash bags in two sizes: small for daily bins, large for the main bin.
- A doormat and paper towels near the entry if shoes track in dirt.
5. Paperwork: your legal base
- Your signed lease, kept in a folder you can find fast.
- A move-in inspection sheet noting any existing damage, so you're not blamed for it later.
- Utility setup for electric, gas, water, internet and trash. Most of this can be done online.
- A rent payment method on file: auto-pay or a saved card in the landlord's portal.
6. What can wait until month two
- A full decor overhaul. Paint, wallpaper and big furniture purchases can wait until the space feels lived-in. For gifts that suit a rental, see our housewarming gift guide.
- Specialty cleaning gear. A steam cleaner or robot vacuum is nice to have, not a week-one need.
- Bulk grocery orders. Buying in bulk before you know your storage space just means clutter.
- Gourmet kitchen gadgets. An air fryer or sous-vide machine can wait until your schedule settles down.
Keep it organized from day one
A printable checklist keeps the paperwork and shopping lists in one place instead of scattered across your phone and sticky notes. Our First Apartment Printable Kit covers the basics above in 8 pages: moving-in checklists, a home inventory, a shopping budget and welcome note cards.
If you want a fuller system, the First Home Bundle adds a moving planner and home maintenance log across 40 pages, so you can track everything from lease details to repair requests in one binder.
