Housewarming Gifts for New Homeowners
Buying a house takes most of a person's savings. Then the house starts asking for things: a ladder, a hose, a second set of keys. The best housewarming gifts for new homeowners do one of two jobs. They save a trip to the hardware store, or they make one room feel finished while the others are still full of boxes.
What changes when someone owns the place
- They are the landlord now. A dripping tap or a stuck door is theirs to fix. Tools get used.
- There is more to look after. A yard, a porch, gutters, a garage.
- They plan to stay. Decor is a safer gift for an owner than for a renter, because it will not be packed again in a year. Their taste matters more, though.
- Money is tight for a while. Closing costs, movers and the first repairs land in the same few months. For a printable way to plan this, see our new home binder on Etsy. Practical gifts are welcome.
Useful gifts we do not sell
Most of this list comes from a hardware store or a garden center. None of it comes from our shop.
- A cordless drill with a set of bits
- A level, a stud finder and a box of picture hooks
- A step ladder
- A garden hose and a spray nozzle
- A fire extinguisher for the kitchen
- A smoke and carbon monoxide alarm, if the house is short of one
- A snow shovel or a rake, depending on the climate
- A binder or a box for manuals, warranties and paint colors
- A shrub or a young tree for the yard, if they like to garden
- A gift card for a hardware store
Food counts too. A meal dropped off in moving week, or a gift card for a local restaurant, helps on a night when the kitchen is still in boxes. For a coffee gift, see this new home gift mug on Etsy.

For the front door
The front door is the first thing a new owner shows people, and a doormat is a gift they do not have to find a place for. A standard front door is about 3 feet wide. For gifts at closing, see our realtor closing gift guide. An 18 by 30 inch mat fits a single door with room on each side. A double door needs something wider.
We have two in our shop. Both are 18 by 30 inch polyester mats. The first shows a meadow of wildflowers with a few small houses on the hill behind it. There are no words on it, so it suits any household.

A throw pillow is an easy way to add color before the owners have chosen paint or curtains. Pick a pattern with several colors in it. It will sit well with more sofas than a single bold color will.
Ours is a 16 by 16 inch pillow in spun polyester. The design is a grid of small houses and trees, a little like a quilt.

We design the artwork. A print partner prints each item after it is ordered and ships it to the buyer. Nothing sits in a warehouse, so allow time for printing as well as delivery. Etsy shows the delivery estimate and the shipping cost at checkout. Shipping is extra. We do not offer personalization on these items.
What to skip
- Large art and furniture. They have not decided where things go.
- Anything with their name or the address on it, unless you are sure of the spelling and that they want it on show.
- Strong scents. Candles and diffusers are a matter of taste.
- Tools they already own. Ask first. Nobody needs two stud finders.
- Pets and high-care plants. A new house is enough to look after.
When to give it
- Going to a housewarming party? Bring the gift with you. Something small is fine. A card matters more than the price.
- Sending it by mail? Wait until they have moved in. Closing dates slip, and a parcel on the porch of an empty house is a risk.
- Not sure what they need? Ask, or send a gift card with a note about what you hope they spend it on.
Include a gift receipt where you can. New owners often get two of the same thing.
