First Christmas in a New Home: Ornaments and Gift Ideas
Someone you know moved this year. Maybe it was you. The first Christmas in a new home only happens once at each address, so it is worth marking. This guide covers what to give, what to skip, and a few ornaments and a planner from our shop.
How this gift differs from a housewarming gift
- It marks a year. A housewarming gift says welcome. A first Christmas gift says this was the year we moved in.
- It comes back out. An ornament goes on the tree every December, so the gift gets seen again each year.
- It is small. People who moved this year may still have boxes to unpack. A gift that fits in one hand is easy to keep.
Gift ideas by price
| Price | Ideas |
|---|---|
| Under $15 | A box of ornament hooks, a tin of cocoa, a roll of good ribbon, a printable holiday planner |
| $15 to $30 | An ornament, a wreath hanger, a pair of stocking holders |
| $30 to $60 | A tree skirt, a doormat, a storage box for ornaments |
Storage sounds dull, but it is useful. A household with its first tree has nowhere to put the ornaments in January.
Ornaments from our shop
Each of these four is a round ceramic ornament priced at $19.95. None of them can be personalized, so there is no name to get wrong.
Shipping is extra, and on ornaments it is high. They come from a different print partner than our mugs and coasters. On the day we wrote this, US shipping on one ornament was $17.09, and a second ornament in the same order added $1.59. If you are buying for two households, one order costs much less than two. Check the total at checkout before you pay.
With the year on it
A dated ornament fits one year only. For the tree, see this new home ornament on Etsy. These two are for someone who moved in 2026.
The first is this dated ornament: a green front door with a wreath, two lanterns and small trees in pots. The year 2026 sits above the door, and a banner below reads Our First Christmas Here. The design is printed on both sides.
The second, this housewarming ornament, shows three houses in the snow, inside a wreath of pine with a key tied in a red bow. It reads Home for Christmas 2026. The word first is not on it, so it also suits someone who moved back to a town they know.
With no year
An ornament with no year works if they moved late last year, or if your gift will arrive in January.
This undated ornament shows a window with a lit Christmas tree inside, dark shutters and snow on the sill. A wreath of leaves and red berries goes around it. The banner reads Our First Christmas Here, and a small key hangs below.

If the new home is yours
Your first December in a new place has more jobs than usual. You are learning the oven, the parking and where the guests will sleep, all while buying gifts.
Our Christmas holiday planner bundle has 20 printable pages. They cover a holiday budget, two gift list pages, a Christmas card tracker, a meal planner, a grocery list, a baking plan and a decorating checklist. Five countdown pages run from six weeks out to the day itself. It is a download, so nothing ships. You print it at home in US Letter or A4.

- Pick the spot for the tree before you buy one. Measure the ceiling height and the width of the corner.
- Find the outlets. Check there is one near the tree and one near the front window.
- Send your new address with your cards. Many people will still have the old one.
- Start one small tradition. A photo at the front door each December costs nothing, and it shows how the home changes.
How our products are made
We design the artwork. A print partner prints each item after it is ordered and ships it to the buyer. Nothing sits in a warehouse, so allow time for printing as well as delivery. Etsy shows the delivery estimate and the shipping cost at checkout.
Props shown in the photos are not included. Colors can vary a little between a screen and the finished item.
What to skip
- Large decorations. They have not found a place for their own things yet.
- A live tree or a big plant as a surprise. It needs space and care they may not have this month.
- Decor in a strong color scheme. Wait until you have seen the rooms.
- A dated gift for the wrong year. If they moved in late 2025, pick a design with no year.
When to send it
- Order in October or early November. The weeks before Christmas are the busiest of the year for printing and post.
- Give it before the tree goes up. Many households put the tree up in the days after Thanksgiving. An ornament that arrives first gets a good spot.
- Add a card with the date they moved. It turns a small gift into a record of the year.
